Data Standards Programme

Reference: Change Request 290
Version No:1.6
Subject:DSCN 54/2002 - National Cancer Data Set - Site Specific Items
Type of Change:Revision of NHS Data Standards
Effective Date:1 January 2003
Reason for Change:Integration of the National Cancer Data Set Site Specific data items into the NHS Data Dictionary Version.2

Background:

The National Cancer Data Set Project, run by the NHS Information Authority, has produced a set of data items relating to the diagnosis and management of cancer.

The purpose of the National Cancer Minimum Data Set is to advise organisations within the National Health Service on a transferable set of data. These data will meet the needs of clinical audit, assist in the generation of National Performance Indicators and will allow outcome assessment.

Data Standards to support parts of the National Cancer Data Set have been released earlier in the following DSCNs:
10/2002 Data Standards: Radiotherapy Treatments
23/2002 Data Standards: Chemotherapy HRGs
30/2002 Data Standards: change to Monitoring of the Cancer Waiting Times

More information about the project and the Data Set can be found at:

http://www.nhsia.nhs.uk/cancer/pages/default.asp

DSCN 53/2002 defines NHS Data standards to support Version 1.3_ISB core data set, and this DSCN defines NHS data standards to support Version 1.3_ISB additional site specific data items for seven types of cancer: Breast, Colorectal, Lung, Head & Neck, Urological, Upper Gastro-Intestinal and Gynaecological.

See Clinical Coding for International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) and Read Coded Clinical Terms.

Clinical Terms (The Read Codes) can be used in addition to ICD-10 codes for Patient Diagnosis. However Clinical Terms (The Read Codes) are not accepted for the purposes of central HES data, where ICD-10 is mandatory.

ICD-10 diagnostic codes are at least four characters in length. The first character is always alphabetic. Where an undivided three character code is used, the fourth character must be filled with 'X'.

Fifth characters should be used in accordance with the guidance in Introduction. Where they are not used the character must be filled with a '-'. The sixth character of the code is used to designate an asterisk or dagger indicator in ICD-10; it may be an 'A' or 'D'.
