Version No:1.3
Subject:DSCN 39/2002 - Specialised Commissioning Services and Supra Services
Type of Change:Revision of NHS data standards
Effective Date:1 April 2003
Reason for Change:Publication of specialised services definitions and supra services

Background:

Specialised Commissioning Services The National Specialised Services Definition Set is published on: www.doh.gov.uk/specialisedservicesdefinitions . The definitions identify the activities that should be regarded as specialised and therefore subject to any arrangements that are in place for the commissioning of specialised services. The definitions provide a helpful basis for service reviews and strategic planning and enable commissioners to establish a broad base-line position and make initial comparisons on activity and spend. Supra Services Supra Service Type classifications were out of date and more specific information on services regarded as specialist by the National Specialist Commissioning Advisory Group (NSCAG) can be found at http://www.doh.gov.uk/nscag. This DSCN introduces data standards to support Specialised Commissioning Services, and removes the out of date classification for Supra Service Type.

Model View Diagram - Overview

HP180 - OPERATING THEATRES

  1. This diagram shows the classes relevant to OPERATING THEATRES.

  1. An OPERATING THEATRE has an operational plan (OPERATING THEATRE OPERATIONAL PLAN) which gives the services intended to be available for a specified period. The OPERATING THEATRE INTENDED SPECIALTY gives the total number of scheduled sessions intended for each SPECIALTY FUNCTION during a specified period.

  1. There will be a CONSULTANT responsible for a scheduled OPERATING THEATRE SESSION although this may differ from the CONSULTANT planned for the session. The CONSULTANT responsible for a THEATRE CASE is always recorded for unscheduled sessions, since there may be more than one CONSULTANT with THEATRE CASES in an unscheduled OPERATING THEATRE SESSION. The CONSULTANT responsible is always recorded for emergency THEATRE CASES as these may be treated during scheduled or unscheduled sessions including sessions held by other CONSULTANTS.

  1. A number of THEATRE CASES may be treated in a particular OPERATING THEATRE during an OPERATING THEATRE SESSION. Even if the PATIENT is to visit the theatre (THEATRE CASE) outside a scheduled OPERATING THEATRE SESSION, the CONSULTANT and SPECIALTY FUNCTION are known. It may be necessary to identify THEATRE CASES to a supra service type, where applicable, depending on local arrangements for Specialty Costing.

  1. A THEATRE CASE may involve one or more PATIENT PROCEDURES.
