Background:

NHS Executive to Department of Health

The Data Elements HEALTHCARE RESOURCE GROUP CODE and HEALTHCARE RESOURCE GROUP CODE-VERSION NUMBER both contain an instance of 'NHS Executive' (within the notes section) and these instances have been removed from the NHS Data Dictionary by this DSCN and have been replaced with 'Department of Health'.

HRG Code - HRGS are not derived

HEALTHCARE RESOURCE GROUP CODES for Out-Patient Attendance CDSs, are directly assigned not derived from any other CDS items. This DSCN has changed the notes of data elements HEALTHCARE RESOURCE GROUP CODE and HEALTHCARE RESOURCE GROUP CODE-VERSION NUMBER data elements, to indicate that Out-Patient HRGs cannot be derived from other CDS items.

The National Schedule of Reference Costs, developed by the NHS Executive, uses Healthcare Resource Groups (HRGs) as the basis for costing inpatient and daycase services. Healthcare Resource Groups (HRGs) are derived from existing CDS data items using an algorithm and a software package developed by the NHS Information Authority (Casemix Programme). HEALTHCARE RESOURCE GROUP CODES identifies the HRG that has been derived from the source data items. The National Schedule of Reference Costs, developed by the Department of Health, uses Healthcare Resource Groups (HRGs) as the basis for costing inpatient and daycase services.

Healthcare Resource Groups (HRGs) for Admitted Patient Care are derived from existing CDS data items.

DSCN 08/2000 includes HEALTHCARE RESOURCE GROUP CODES in the core CDS to standardise the handling of this data item within the CDS, the NHSCDS EDIFACT message and the NWCS database. HRGs for Out-Patient Attendances are directly assigned and cannot be derived from the Out-Patient Attendance CDS data items.

HEALTHCARE RESOURCE GROUP CODES identify the HRGs.

DSCN 08/2000 includes HEALTHCARE RESOURCE GROUP CODES in the core CDS to standardise the handling of this data item within the CDS, the NHS CDS EDIFACT message and the NWCS database. It is mandatory from 01/10/2001.

Healthcare Resource Groups (HRGs) are derived from existing CDS data items using an algorithm and a software package developed by the NHS Information Authority (Population Health and Service Management Information Programme). HEALTHCARE RESOURCE GROUP CODE-VERSION NUMBERS identifies which version of the HRG Grouper has been used to derive the HRG from the source data items. The National Schedule of Reference Costs, developed by the Department of Health, uses Healthcare Resource Groups (HRGs) as the basis for costing inpatient and daycase services.

Healthcare Resource Groups (HRGs) are derived for Admitted Patient Care from existing CDS data items.

HRGs for Out-Patient Attendances are directly assigned and cannot be derived from the Out-Patient Attendance CDS data items.

HEALTHCARE RESOURCE GROUP CODE-VERSION NUMBERS identify which version of the HRG Group has been used to identify the HRG.


This will facilitate the management of regular HRG updates issued by the NHS Information Authority.
